Side Effects Anxiety Medication Herbs
The biggest risk associated with herbal remedies for anxiety comes from taking herbal supplements while also using prescription drugs. Currently, herbal and dietary supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as foods, not as drugs. This means that the standard is not as rigid or restrictive as it is for pharmaceuticals, and they are not pre-approved for their safety or effectiveness. Many herbs are toxic and the biggest risk to consumers is when over the counter products are purchased and consumed and then react adversely with prescription drugs that a person may be taking. Any kind of herbal supplement should be avoided during pregnancy or by women who are breast feeding. Some other common side effects of herbal supplements may include:
  • Avoid chamomile if you are allergic to ragweed, do not use chamomile on an ongoing basis.
  • St. John's Wort may cause nausea, upset stomach , and occasional allergic reactions
  • Ephedra (ma huang) aggravates anxiety
  • Kava kava can cause drowsiness, and long term use has been associated with liver problems.
  • Feverfew may cause nausea and a few people may develop mouth sores
  • Valerian can cause headaches, nervousness, and vertigo
If you are unsure of what natural herbs for anxiety may be best to help you with a sleep or mood disorder, it is highly recommended that you consult your primary care physician, healthcare professional, or a professionally trained herbalist or homeopath before you began taking any kind of herbal supplement. The herbal remedy for anxiety that will yield the best results for you should be determined by your doctor. Because of complications and risks associated with herbs reacting adversely to prescription medicine, be sure to consult your physician to find out what is the best way to begin using herbal remedies.
