Digestive Properties of Wormwood
What is wormwood, and what role can it play in digestion? Wormwood
(Artemisia absinthium) is a perennial herb from the Asteraceae (aster
) family. It is most commonly known because its oil is used to make
alcoholic beverages such as vermouth and absinthe.
The Wormwood plant has also been medicinally used for hundreds of
years to promote digestion, treat intestinal worms, and liver and
gall bladder problems. Wormwood oil contains the toxins thujone and
isothujone, which stimulate digestive and gallbladder function. It
is not usually taken alone, but instead it is usually blended with
other herbs such as peppermint or caraway.
Wormwood extract or Tincture (a tincture is an alcoholic extract)
and Wormwood tea are two common forms of administering Wormwood. Wormwood
tea can be made by adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (2.5 to 5 grams) of the
herb to 1 cup (250 ml) of boiling water, then steeping for ten to
fifteen minutes. Drink 3 cups a day. Wormwood extract or tincture
can be ingested by adding 10 to 20 drops in water and can be taken
ten to fifteen minutes before each meal. It is not recommended that
you take Wormwood for more than 4 weeks in a row. Digestion
